Newport pub has licence suspended after series of serious incidents
A Newport pub has had its licence suspended for three months after councillors heard evidence of repeated disorder, drug use and safeguarding concerns linked to the premises.
Wales Online reported that Newport City Council’s licensing sub‑committee imposed the suspension on the King pub in Somerton following a review brought by Gwent Police. Officers said they had been called to the premises multiple times in recent months, including to reports of violence, anti‑social behaviour and suspected drug activity.
Police told the committee that staff had failed to control disorderly customers and that management had not taken adequate steps to prevent crime and protect vulnerable people. One incident involved a man being assaulted outside the pub, while another saw officers discover evidence of drug use on the premises.
The committee heard that the pub had been issued with warnings and advice but that problems continued. Councillors said they were not satisfied that the premises was being operated responsibly or in line with licensing objectives.
In addition to the three‑month suspension, the committee imposed new conditions on the licence, including requirements around CCTV, staff training and incident recording. The licence holder has the right to appeal.
Gwent Police said the decision reflected the seriousness of the issues raised and the need to protect the local community.
