Newcastle proposes to abolish the Late Night Levy

Newcastle City Council is preparing to abolish its late‑night levy this autumn, following a Licensing Committee recommendation to end the charge on 31 October 2026. The levy, introduced in 2013, currently applies to premises licensed to sell alcohol between midnight and 6am and was designed to help fund management of the night‑time economy, particularly costs linked to alcohol‑related crime and disorder.

The proposal follows a consultation prompted by concerns from operators about the financial pressure created by the annual levy fee. According to the council’s final review report, presented at the Licensing Committee meeting on 24 August, 93% of respondents supported removing the levy. Committee members agreed to recommend abolition to full Council, with a statutory consultation now underway before a final decision is made.

The council is seeking views on the potential impact of revoking the levy, whether alternative arrangements should be considered to mitigate any negative effects, and any other factors it should take into account. Responses must be submitted by 22 September 2026.
