Hospitality sector constrained by rising costs despite strong summer trading
A new industry survey has revealed that nearly three-quarters of hospitality businesses in the UK are operating at or below 85% of their required capacity, despite a robust summer season. The findings point to mounting financial pressures that continue to hinder recovery across the sector.
The survey, conducted by leading hospitality bodies, highlights the impact of rising operational costs—including energy bills, food prices, and wage increases—on the ability of venues to operate at full strength. Many businesses reported that while customer demand remained strong over the summer months, cost burdens have forced them to reduce staffing, limit opening hours, or scale back services.
Industry leaders warn that the current operating levels are unsustainable for many businesses, particularly independent venues that lack the financial resilience of larger chains. The reduced capacity is affecting profitability and long-term viability, with some operators expressing concern about surviving the upcoming winter period.
The data underscores the need for targeted support measures to help the sector navigate ongoing economic challenges. Trade associations have renewed calls for government intervention, including VAT relief, business rate reform, and energy cost support, to prevent further closures and job losses.
