Government announces £210m funding package to revitalise town centres

The UK Government has announced a £210 million package aimed at bringing vacant and derelict buildings back into use, with funding intended to help local authorities and communities transform underused sites into assets that attract people back to town and city centres.

The investment, unveiled on 25 September, forms part of the Government’s wider plans to support high street regeneration and strengthen local communities. Ministers say the funding will help convert boarded-up shops, disused cinemas, vacant shopping centres and other long-term empty buildings into facilities such as community hubs, health centres, cafés, workspaces and civic spaces.

At the centre of the package is a new £125 million Derelict Buildings Fund, which will provide support to local authorities seeking to bring neglected buildings back into productive use. According to the Government, the funding is intended to address the visible decline experienced in many town centres where vacant premises have become increasingly common.

A further £65 million has been allocated to support community ownership initiatives, helping local groups rescue buildings and organisations considered important to their neighbourhoods. This could include premises such as pubs, sports clubs and other valued community assets that are at risk of closure.

The remaining £20 million will be split between two programmes. Half will support High Street Rental Auctions, a scheme designed to bring long-term vacant commercial properties back into use, while the other half will fund a new Co-operative Development Programme aimed at increasing community involvement and ownership on local high streets.

Announcing the funding, the Government said the measures form part of its commitment to devolve greater powers and investment opportunities to local places, giving communities more influence over the future of their town centres.

The announcement is likely to be of particular interest to local authorities, regeneration teams and town centre partnerships, many of which continue to face challenges associated with changing shopping habits, vacant retail units and declining footfall. The funding package is intended to support efforts to repurpose these spaces and encourage renewed economic and community activity in town centres across England.

The Government said the investment builds on existing regeneration initiatives and community-led projects that have already helped bring vacant buildings back into use in a number of locations around the country.
