Gambling participation in Great Britain sees notable shifts in 2025, according to new survey data.

The Gambling Commission has released its Wave 1 2025 official statistics from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain, revealing significant insights into gambling behaviour across the country. The data, collected between March and May 2025, marks the first wave of a new, continuous survey approach designed to provide more timely and detailed information about gambling participation.

Key findings from Wave 1, 2025

  • Overall gambling participation: 48% of adults aged 18 and over reported gambling in the past four weeks, with the most common activity being the National Lottery 32%. Other popular forms included scratchcards (13%) and tickets for other charity lottery draws 16%.
  • Online gambling trends: Approximately 38% of respondents engaged in online gambling (which falls to 16 percent when lottery draw only players are removed) with online lottery products being the most prevalent. Online gambling was more common among men 41% than women 34% (or excluding lottery draw only players: men 20% and women 11%).
  • Demographic differences:
    • Men were more likely to gamble than women (51% vs 45%)
    • Participation peaked among those aged 55-64, with 54% reporting gambling activity.
    • Younger adults (18–24) showed lower overall participation 33%.
  • Motivations and behaviours:
    • The most cited reason for gambling was “to win money” 85% and “for fun” 70%

Methodology and implications

The Commission notes that these findings will inform regulatory decisions, public health strategies, and future research. The next wave of data is expected later in 2025, offering further insights into seasonal and behavioural trends.

For policymakers, researchers, and public health professionals, the 2025 Wave 1 statistics provide a crucial snapshot of gambling habits and risks in Great Britain, helping shape interventions and support services tailored to evolving patterns of play.
