What brought you to licensing? IoL launches campaign to put licensing careers in the spotlight
The Institute of Licensing (IoL) is launching a new video series that puts the spotlight on the people behind the profession — and their routes into a career they might never have expected.
What brings someone into licensing? A career in politics? A job in customer services? Or a complete change of direction from working in a supermarket?
The answer, it seems, is all of the above.
The IoL is launching What brought you to licensing?, the first in a series of videos celebrating the people working in licensing and highlighting the profession as a career choice.
Featuring young licensing officers talking about how they found their way into the sector, the opening video challenges the assumption that licensing is a career people necessarily set out to pursue. Instead, it reveals how different experiences, unexpected opportunities and a willingness to try something new can lead to a rewarding career.
For one officer, an interest in politics led to a desire to work in local government. Another describes how working in customer services brought them into contact with Licensing Act applications — and sparked an interest in the work. For another, moving from a job at Sainsbury’s into licensing represented a complete change of direction.

Their stories are different, but a common theme emerges: discovering a profession that offers variety, interaction with people and the opportunity to develop a career in an area they had not necessarily considered before.
As one officer explains, the work is different every day. Another describes licensing as a career change and something they had never done before, while the enthusiasm of the interviewees reflects how quickly an unexpected opportunity can turn into a genuine career interest.
And that is precisely the message the IoL wants to get across.
Licensing is an essential part of how communities function, touching on businesses, public safety, local economies and the places where people live, work and spend their leisure time. Yet the career opportunities it offers may not always be obvious to people considering their next move — particularly those at the beginning of their working lives or looking for a change of direction.
By giving young licensing officers the opportunity to tell their own stories, the IoL aims to bring the profession to life in a way that job descriptions and career profiles alone cannot. These are real people explaining how they got started, what attracted them to the work and why they have stayed.
The launch video is just the beginning. It is the first in a series of films that will be released over the coming weeks, continuing to explore the people, experiences and routes into licensing.
The message is simple: you may not have started out thinking about a career in licensing. But perhaps you should.
