Britain’s night-time economy shrinks by 350 venues in six months, new data shows

The latest NTIA and NielsenIQ, powered by CGA intelligence, Night Time Economy Market Monitor highlights the continued long-term contraction of Britain’s night-time economy, with a net loss of 350 venues recorded during the first six months of 2026. The decline equates to more than 13 businesses disappearing from the market every week, underscoring the persistent challenges facing the sector and extending a trend that has been evident for several years.

While individual policy announcements and short-term economic developments continue to affect trading conditions, the latest figures point to a deeper structural issue. The ongoing reduction in the number of licensed venues reflects sustained pressures on operators, including rising costs, changing consumer habits and a challenging operating environment that has steadily reduced the overall size of the night-time economy.

The data suggests that the sector’s difficulties cannot be viewed solely through the lens of recent fiscal decisions. Instead, the loss of hundreds of venues in just six months forms part of a broader long-term pattern of decline, raising concerns about the future vitality of town and city centre night-time economies across Britain. Industry leaders have warned that without measures to support sustainability and investment, the gradual erosion of the nation’s hospitality, leisure and entertainment infrastructure is likely to continue.
