Welsh Government updates dash cam policy for taxi and private hire vehicles
The Welsh Government has published changes to its dash cam policy for licensed taxi and private hire vehicles. The policy is also available in Welsh.
The policy – that was updated on 13 November 2025 -provides guidance to licence holders on the installation and use of Video Point of Impact System (VPIS) systems in licensed vehicles.
There are a number of changes made to the new version including:
- A better explanation for dashcam use.
- Reference to UKCA-marked or CE-marked dashcams.
- Reference to UKGDPR.
- A link to ICO data protection self-assessment checker.
- No audio or disabled audio on Dashcams.
- Guidance for local authorities to record and be able to identify vehicles with a dashcam in use.
- Recommended standard conditions for local authorities to use for drivers and vehicles (about dashcam use).
The Welsh Government, along with other UK Governments, will provide taxi and Private hire licensing updates on 26th November at the IoL’s National Licensing Conference. You can book your place on the IoL’s website.
