Britain set to see a pub close every single day in 2025

Britain is facing the prospect of a pub closing every single day in 2025, with industry figures from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) revealing that 378 closures are expected across England, Wales and Scotland. These closures would result in more than 5,600 direct job losses and underscore the impact of rising operational costs on the hospitality sector.

The BBPA, which represents over 20,000 pubs, has warned that high tax burdens and regulatory pressures are driving many venues out of business despite good trading performance. Chief Executive Emma McClarkin stated that much of the revenue generated by pubs is absorbed by bills and taxes, making it nearly impossible for many establishments to turn a profit.

Calling for urgent government intervention, the BBPA urged reforms to the business rates system and reductions in employment and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) costs. It also advocated for cuts in beer duty, arguing that the sector is one of the most heavily taxed in the UK and deserves meaningful policy changes to unlock its economic and social potential.

Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, said: 

“Pubs are trading well but most of the money that goes into the till goes straight back out in bills and taxes. For many it’s impossible to make a profit which all too often leads to pubs turning off the lights for the last time. 

“When a pub closes it puts people out of a job, deprives communities of their heart and soul, and hurts the local economy.  

“However, it’s not too late to change this sad state of affairs. We know Government recognises the economic and social value of pubs and we’re not asking for special treatment, we just want the sector’s rich potential unleashed.  

“We’re calling on Government to proceed with meaningful business rates reform, mitigate these eye-watering new employment and EPR costs, and cut beer duty.”  

The association highlighted the broader consequences of pub closures, including negative effects on local communities and supply chain industries such as farming and brewing. With pubs contributing over £34 billion to the UK economy and supporting more than one million jobs annually, the BBPA stressed that preserving the sector should be a national priority.

The projected closures in 2025 mark an increase from 350 closures the previous year. The BBPA also noted that for every three pounds spent in a pub, one goes directly to taxation, further illustrating the financial strain on the industry.
