‘Prohibition of loyalty schemes' due to come into effect in April Published Date: 13/03/2023

Section 20 ‘Prohibition of loyalty schemes,’ of the Licensing and Registration of Clubs (Amendment) Act (Northern Ireland) 2021 is due to come into effect on 6 April 2023 and will affect all licensed premises with membership schemes.

Licence holders will be prohibited from operating a membership scheme which provides rewards to its members when purchasing intoxicating liquor and allows the member to redeem the rewards to purchase intoxicating liquor at a reduced price or receive it free of charge.

Operating such a scheme carries a fine of up to £5000.

The Department for Communities has issued guidance to accompany the Act.
