Welsh Minister updates on Animal Health and Welfare regulation in Wales

Welsh Deputy First Minister has provided an update in the Senedd on the Welsh Government’s work on animal health and welfare.

The Minister said the overarching goal is for Wales to be recognized for exemplary standards in animal health and welfare, supporting a thriving rural economy, the environment, and public health.

Animal Disease Prevention:

  • A top priority is to keep animal disease out of Wales, maintaining preparedness and responding to threats and outbreaks.
  • Collaborative efforts with the UK, Scottish, and Northern Ireland Governments to enhance safety and security controls at borders.
  • International recognition for measures to control antibiotic resistance in animals.

 

Bovine TB:

  • A partnership approach with farmers and vets is crucial for the goal of a TB-free Wales.
  • Establishment of TB governance arrangements to provide expert and strategic advice.

 

Animal Welfare Plan for Wales:

  • The plan outlines the delivery of priorities, focusing on enforcement and training through the Animal Licensing Wales project.
  • Achievements include a website for local authorities, breeders, and the public, and recognition with an RSPCA PawPrints award.
  • Supported the ban on live animal exports for slaughter and working with the UK Government on Bills related to livestock attacks and pet imports.
  • Committed to legislating for mandatory CCTV use in all Welsh slaughterhouses.

 

Further Welfare Improvements:

  • Consultation on the licensing of animal welfare establishments, with a summary of responses published in December.
  • Emphasis on responsible dog breeding and ownership, highlighted at an October summit.

 

Disease Threats:

Greyhound Racing Ban:
