Nominations for the Charles Holland Award 2026 are now open

Nominations for the Charles Holland Award 2026 are now open, inviting submissions that recognise exceptional early‑career professionals working across the licensing field. The award, created by the Institute of Licensing (IoL) and Francis Taylor Building (FTB), honours the late Charles Holland, a highly respected barrister known for his expertise, generosity, and commitment to developing new talent in the profession.

The award was established to celebrate individuals who reflect the qualities Charles Holland was known for: deep technical skill, integrity, and a willingness to support colleagues. Charles, who passed away in 2025, was a leading figure in licensing law and a long‑standing contributor to the IoL, including as deputy editor of the Journal of Licensing. His influence on the sector, particularly on younger practitioners, is widely acknowledged.

Eligibility and nomination details

Nominations are open to:

• Practitioners aged under 30, or
• Practitioners with less than 10 years’ experience in licensing.

Nominations, by third party nomination only, may come from any part of the licensing community, including local authorities, the police, private practice, or industry roles. IoL membership is not required, and shortlisted non‑members will receive a complimentary one‑year membership.

• Final stage: Finalists will attend the IoL National Training Conference Gala Dinner in November, where the winner will be announced

The inaugural award in 2025 was presented to Finley Best, setting a strong precedent for the calibre of future nominees.

Charles gave his time, his insight, and his patience freely to anyone who needed help — whether they were taking their first steps in licensing or were seasoned practitioners grappling with complex issues. It was this spirit of generosity and encouragement that defined his career.

This award is a fitting tribute to a man who believed passionately in nurturing the next generation. Charles cared deeply about the licensing profession and gave so much to the Institute of Licensing. He was unflinchingly courageous in his pursuit of excellence. His family are deeply touched to see his legacy honoured in this way, and all of us at Francis Taylor Building are proud to support an award that reflects the values he lived by every day.”
