Gambling Commission publishes latest fortnightly update

The Gambling Commission’s 27 April newsletter highlights key regulatory developments, new analysis work and the latest episode of its Inside the Commission podcast.

The lead story confirms that the High Court has rejected in full the legal challenges brought by The New Lottery Company Limited and Northern & Shell PLC over the award of the Fourth National Lottery Licence. The ruling upholds the Commission’s decision‑making process and brings the long‑running dispute to a close.

An update is also provided on the post‑pilot analysis of Financial Risk Assessments. Director of Major Policy Projects and Evaluation Helen Rhodes reports that the Commission is continuing to examine data from last year’s pilot to assess how FRAs align with the outcomes set out in the 2023 Gambling Act Review White Paper, and how they could be used to better protect high‑spending customers experiencing financial difficulty.

The newsletter further includes a summary of the Commission’s latest work on illegal gambling. Head of the Data Innovation Hub Tim Livesley reflects on discussions held at the Spring Evidence Conference and shares insights from updated trends data first published in late 2025.

Finally, a new episode of Inside the Commission is now available. This instalment features members of the Market Insights team discussing how they track emerging industry trends—from shifts in consumer behaviour to the impact of new technologies and AI—to support effective regulation. The episode is available on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
