Digital ID to be introduced for pubs and clubs
It has been reported that, starting in 2025, Government-backed digital ID cards will allow individuals to prove their age and identity via an app.
This will eliminate the need to carry physical documents like driving licences or passports when buying alcohol in licensed venues.
This initiative, part of a broader digital transformation, aims to simplify identity verification for various activities such as visiting pubs, opening bank accounts, and paying taxes.
The new system will employ a “single sign-on” method for improved user experience and is set to meet strict government security standards.
Currently under review by Parliament, the Data Bill will enable digital identity services to seek certification and display a trust mark on the Gov.ukregister. Retailers and landlords will be able to verify ages using QR codes or similar technology. Despite the push for digital IDs, they will remain optional, with traditional documents still accepted.
Additionally, 250,000 former service personnel will receive digital veteran cards to expedite access to support services.
