Camden Council moves to extend late night levy to late‑night refreshment venues
Camden Council has approved plans to update its Late Night Levy, with the most significant change being the inclusion of premises licensed for late‑night refreshment. The decision follows a statutory consultation and a review of the levy’s operation since its introduction in 2016.
Under the updated scheme, late‑night refreshment venues trading between midnight and 6am will now be required to pay the levy, bringing them into scope alongside alcohol‑licensed premises. The council said the change is intended to ensure a more consistent contribution from businesses benefiting from the late‑night economy.
The fee structure remains unchanged, ranging from £299 to £4,440 depending on rateable value. The council has also committed to improving transparency and reporting around how levy funds are used, alongside strengthening oversight arrangements.
The Licensing Committee endorsed the reforms in February, and full council approval followed in early March. Camden has not yet confirmed when the updated levy will take effect, but affected licence holders will receive formal notification before implementation.
