Bands are skipping more towns and cities on tour
The Music Venue Trust reports a significant decline in live music across UK towns and cities, with artists now performing an average of 11 shows per tour, down from 22 in 1994.
This trend affects not only grassroots but also midcapacity and arena tours, leading to what Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy calls “cultural deserts.” Rising costs for artists, venues, and fans contribute to fewer gigs and limited access to live music, forcing fans to travel long distances for shows.
The Music Venue Trust advocates for a £1 levy on all arena and stadium concerts to support grassroots venues and urges the government to cut VAT on gig tickets to alleviate financial pressures on the industry.
