An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full-time role within Essex Police, based at Braintree Police station. The focus of the role is to provide clerical and administrative support to police licensing officers, extending to the giving of advice and assistance to police colleagues, the licensed trade and the public on routine licensing matters, particularly relating to matters connected to the Licensing Act 2003 (for which knowledge-based training will be provided).

This role has telephone contact with existing and potential members of the licensed trade, the public and a wide range of agencies, though most activity relates to the processing of electronic applications and correspondence via e-mail. The role requires generic IT skills and basic typing competency. You will be provided with training in the use of bespoke police IT systems but basic familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Word is a necessity. You should have a logical and enquiring approach to their work, with attention to detail, and the ability to use judgement and pursue enquiries. You should have sound organisational skills and the ability to work with minimum supervision once trained.

After initial training, the post offers office based agile working: working predominantly (60% or more) in one office space. The rest of the time works at home or at other police site locations.  A laptop, mouse and keyboard are supplied.

This is a full time role (37 hours per week), generally Monday to Friday, between the range of 07.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. (subject to agreement) and flexible working arrangements, such as flexitime, may apply.

You will work within a small team, supported by direct local supervision, and presents an ideal opportunity for those beginning their employment journey, those returning from an absence from the workplace or seeking to increase their hours and those simply seeking a change in role.

At shortlisting we will be looking for essential evidence of:

  • Experience of using computer systems, to both input information and using stored information to inform decision making, including Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Good verbal communication skills because you are required to provide advice and guidance to a variety of stakeholders (both internal and external).
  • A logical and enquiring approach to your work, with attention to detail.
  • Experience of gathering and recording evidence.

In addition, it would be helpful if you could evidence:

  • Previous experience of quickly assimilating knowledge of legislation/procedure in a new role.
  • Team working.

Our Location

The Licensing Unit is based at Braintree Police Station.  This is a modern office environment with good road networks and public transport links.  There is no parking available on site but several public car parks nearby.
