Union considers legal action against TfL over licensing delays

The GMB Union is taking a firm stance here, highlighting what it describes as a systemic failure by TfL that has left drivers financially stranded. Their possible legal action underscores not only the practical consequences of administrative delays but also the emotional and economic toll on workers who rely on timely licence renewals to earn a living.

It’s notable that while TfL acknowledged the issue, GMB argues that recognition alone doesn’t resolve the loss of earnings and personal hardship faced by its members. This move—potentially pursuing legal redress—could set an important precedent for how public agencies are held accountable for operational inefficiencies that materially affect workers’ lives.

Steve Garelick, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

“We understand the severe impact that TfL’s licensing delays have had on our members’ livelihoods.  TfL has previously acknowledged that some drivers were impacted by system issues.

“However, this public acknowledgement does not address the financial stress they have suffered. GMB is committed to exploring every avenue to seek redress for those who have been unfairly affected.”
