{"id":9138,"date":"2024-07-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/2024\/07\/14\/luton-private-hire-driver-loses-appeal-against-revoked-licence-over-inappropriate-behaviour\/"},"modified":"2024-07-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-07-14T00:00:00","slug":"luton-private-hire-driver-loses-appeal-against-revoked-licence-over-inappropriate-behaviour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/luton-private-hire-driver-loses-appeal-against-revoked-licence-over-inappropriate-behaviour\/","title":{"rendered":"Luton private hire driver loses appeal against revoked licence over &#8220;inappropriate behaviour&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sc-gkJlnC iukvOC below-image article-standfirst\">A taxi driver has lost his appeal against Luton Borough Council\u2019s decision to revoke his licence after it was told he had behaved inappropriately towards a female passenger.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Markup__ParagraphWrapper-sc-13q6ywe-0 dnxURh markup \">\n<p>The council revoked Achadur Rahman\u2019s Private Hire Driver&#8217;s licence in May 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Markup__ParagraphWrapper-sc-13q6ywe-0 dnxURh markup \">\n<p>Mr Rahman, of Whitby Road in Luton, appealed the council\u2019s decision \u2013 but the appeal was dismissed at Luton Magistrate\u2019s Court and costs of \u00a31,612.90 were awarded to Luton council.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Markup__ParagraphWrapper-sc-13q6ywe-0 dnxURh markup \">\n<p>In a statement, the council said: \u201cThe court decided the council was not wrong in their decision to immediately revoke the licence in the interests of the protection of public safety, and therefore dismissed the appeal.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Markup__ParagraphWrapper-sc-13q6ywe-0 dnxURh markup \">\n<p>It added: \u201cThe council has a duty to ensure that any person to whom they grant a taxi or private hire vehicle driver\u2019s licence is a fit and proper person to be a licensee and the safeguarding of the public is paramount.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Markup__ParagraphWrapper-sc-13q6ywe-0 dnxURh markup \">\n<p>Cllr Maria Lovell portfolio holder responsible for community safety at Luton Council said, \u201cWe have a duty to ensure public safety and confidence in our licenced drivers.
