{"id":9099,"date":"2024-06-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/2024\/06\/06\/guide-dogs-campaign-to-end-taxi-access-refusals-for-assistance-dogs\/"},"modified":"2024-06-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T00:00:00","slug":"guide-dogs-campaign-to-end-taxi-access-refusals-for-assistance-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/guide-dogs-campaign-to-end-taxi-access-refusals-for-assistance-dogs\/","title":{"rendered":"Guide Dogs campaign to end taxi access refusals for assistance dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Guide Dogs has written to local authorities seeking support for its &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guidedogs.org.uk\/blog\/guide-dogs-launches-open-doors-campaign-against-illegal-access-refusals\">Open Doors<\/a>&#8221; campaign to end illegal access refusals. <\/p>\n<p>Guide Dogs is calling for all Licensing Authorities in England to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>require taxi and minicab drivers to take disability equality training, as a condition of receiving their licence;<\/li>\n<li>adopt a zero-tolerance approach to any reports of taxi and PHV drivers refusing access to assistance dog owners;<\/li>\n<li>share the attached guidance on the law on carrying guide or other assistance dogs with all taxi and PHV operators, and self-employed drivers licensed in your area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the correspondence to local authorities, Jessica Luke, Regional Policy and Campaigns Manager, wrote:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8220;We would be very grateful if you could <strong><a href=\"\/media\/ee4k4o3f\/letter-to-taxi-operators-on-assistance-dogs.docx\" title=\"Letter To Taxi Operators On Assistance Dogs\">circulate guidance<\/a><\/strong> on an annual basis to reduce the number of illegal access refusals and help more people with sight loss to live the life they choose. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;For more information on how best to mitigate barriers to the carriage of guide or other assistance dogs, please see section 4.8 of the UK Government\u2019s Inclusive Transport Strategy.&#8221;#<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Guide Dogs research shows that over 80% of guide dog owners have experienced an access refusal \u2013 and 63% have been refused access to a taxi or PHV in the 12-month period prior to our survey.
