{"id":9071,"date":"2024-05-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/2024\/05\/10\/gender-specific-toilets-to-be-required-in-non-residential-buildings-in-england\/"},"modified":"2024-05-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T00:00:00","slug":"gender-specific-toilets-to-be-required-in-non-residential-buildings-in-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/gender-specific-toilets-to-be-required-in-non-residential-buildings-in-england\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender-specific toilets to be required in non-residential buildings in England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New restaurants, offices, schools and hospitals in England will be required to have separate male and female toilets, in a move ministers say will combat growing concerns about \u201cprivacy and dignity\u201d in gender-neutral facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The law will mean newly built non-residential buildings require separate facilities, and cannot solely have \u201cuniversal\u201d lavatories.<\/p>\n<p>Changes to building regulations will ensure that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>separate single-sex toilets facilities are provided for men and women<\/li>\n<li>self-contained, universal toilets may be provided in addition to single-sex toilets, where space allows<\/li>\n<li>self-contained universal toilets may be provided instead of single-sex toilets only where lack of space reasonably precludes provision of single-sex toilet accommodation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Housing Minister Lee Rowley said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>We know all members of society value safety, privacy and dignity, and this new legislation will help ensure the right facilities are in place for everyone.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is vital that new buildings, particularly in public spaces, are serving the community with right toilet provision.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Minister for Women and Equalities Kemi Badenoch said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>These regulations will guide organisations to design unisex and single-sex toilets, ending the rise of so-called \u201cgender-neutral\u201d mixed sex toilet spaces, which deny privacy and dignity to both men and women.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Today\u2019s announcement will also create better provision for women so that our particular biological, health and sanitary needs are met.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This is following our work last week limiting the use of mixed-sex wards in the NHS and demonstrates how this government is committed to ensuring single-sex spaces are protected for all.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New restaurants, offices, schools and hospitals in England will be required to have separate male and female toilets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9071","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"modified_by":null,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9071","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9071"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9071\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9071"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9071"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/instituteoflicensing.org\/news_archive\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9071"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
