MUP in Wales set to come into force Published Date: 27/02/2020

The Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) (Wales) Act 2018 is set to come into force on 2 March 2020.

According to the Welsh Government, the Act will impose a minimum unit price of 50p and will create an offence for any alcohol retailer who “sells or supplies, or authorises the sale or supply of alcohol” below the minimum price.

The Welsh Government has previously said that: “The harm caused by alcohol is a major public health issue, leading to over 500 deaths a year. It affects individuals’ health, the NHS, the economy and families.

“We are introducing a minimum price for alcohol to help reduce harm. The policy targets harmful drinking and focuses on low cost, high strength products.”

The legislation enabling us to set a minimum unit price was passed on 9 August 2018.
