Conditionality & tax registration checks – update Published Date: 17/12/2020

HRMC are now in the development phase of the online tax registration check and they are seeking information from licensing authorities to help with the development of the tool.

An overview of the communication to licensing authorities:

Dear Licensing Authority,

At Spring Budget 2020, the government announced that it will introduce a tax registration check linked to licence processes for certain public sector licences in England and Wales, specifically Taxi and PHV driver, PHV operator, and scrap metal licensing.

I am writing to ask you to help us in our work to design the IT system, which will support the tax registration check, by completing a short survey. This survey will ask you questions about your licensing processes and should take you no more than 10 minutes to complete.

When answering the questions, please refer to your processes around the licence types of Taxi driver, PHV driver, PHV operator, and scrap metal licensing.

The results of the survey will allow us to understand how licensing authority processes operate across England and Wales so that we can ensure the IT system is developed with your needs in mind. Your help, therefore, would be much appreciated.

The survey will take details of your licensing body but will keep the name of the person filling out the survey anonymous.

Licensing authorities can contact Zaynah Hawa (zaynah.hawa@digital.hmrc.gov.uk) for access to survey.
