‘Extremely serious’ disorder sees bar licence revoked

A Scunthorpe bar has lost its premises licence after recent “large-scale disorder” at the venue.

The BBC reported that the Mary Rose in Frodingham Road initially had its licence temporarily suspended at the request of Humberside Police after trouble at the premises on 7 September.

Despite representations from the licence holder for the venue, North Lincolnshire Council’s licensing sub-committee agreed to permanently revoke the licence on Thursday.

“Less punitive measures were discussed extensively,” it stated in the decision outcome, but councillors did not feel these were sufficient, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.

The sub-committee viewed the recent violent incident as “extremely serious”.

The licence holder’s legal representative stated the licensee did not have any involvement with the day-to-day running and management of The Mary Rose, which councillors called “deeply concerning”.

The licence holder can lodge a court appeal within three weeks of the decision.

According to the LDRS, at least 11 men have been charged in connection to the incident and appeared at Grimsby Crown Court earlier in October.
