Greenwich Borough Hall avoids licence suspension after noise complaints

Greenwich Borough Hall has avoided a suspension of its premises licence despite repeated complaints from neighbours about late‑night noise and disruption.

Residents living in Peyton Place told Greenwich Council’s Licensing Review Sub‑Committee that events run by operator Eden Events had caused persistent disturbance, including shouting and disorder as guests left the venue. One neighbour said the noise had repeatedly woken his newborn baby and caused severe stress for his family.

Councillor Pat Slattery requested the licence review after receiving extensive evidence from residents alleging “public nuisance on a significant scale”.

Eden Events argued that cutting hours or suspending the licence would force the venue to close, threatening 60 jobs and undermining daytime community use. Their representative said the company had invested £500,000 to transform the previously derelict building into a functioning events space.

The committee chose not to suspend the licence but imposed new conditions, including reduced Saturday hours, a council‑approved noise management plan, a calibrated noise limiter, quarterly meetings with residents, and restrictions on loading times.

Gary Grant, barrister at Francis Taylor Building, represented Eden Events.
