Leeds is a vibrant and progressive city with thriving business, social and student communities making daily use of thousands of taxi and private hire vehicles. The council has a duty to ensure that people can use these services safely, confident that all vehicles are inspected and drivers checked in accordance with strict driver and vehicle licensing regulations.

The Taxi & Private Hire Licensing section licences more than 11,000 Hackney Carriage (taxis) & Private Hire drivers and vehicles in Leeds.  The Vehicle Examiner role involves the inspection of vehicles to ensure their suitability and Safety for licensing as Taxi & Private Hire vehicles in Leeds and to ensure these vehicles meet the conditions set out by the Council.  The post holder will be authorised by the council to support the function of this regulatory service, which works within a strict legal framework.

We are looking for candidates with an ability to inspect motor vehicles to recognised legal industry standards of road worthiness to determine their safety.  You will be required to demonstrate your experience, knowledge and the ability to both inspect and where necessary investigate and prepare evidence that could be used in court.  The role’s responsibilities include decision making in line with licensing regulations and taking appropriate action in order to bring about compliance where standards have not been met.

You must be able to demonstrate a wide range of experience within the motor industry and hold qualifications to recognised industry standards.  All work is conducted within a strict regulated arena where fairness, accuracy and analysis of information, and the presentation of facts is vital.  You will be responsible for carrying out good quality consistent inspections in line with published conditions and policies, there may be a requirement to carry out investigations and prepare information that maybe presented in court.  There may also be a requirement to attend court.

The role will be required to work 37 hours per week over five days, although a flexible approach to working patterns would be expected, in order to meet the varying demands on the service.

This role is based in the UK.
