Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic, efficient, confident and solutions focused individual to join our newly expanded licensing team.

The West Suffolk licensing service sits within the HR, Governance and Regulatory service and is essential in protecting the public and helping licensable businesses and other organisations to strengthen their reputation and productivity through good regulatory practice.

The licensable activities that we deal with include hackney carriage and private hire vehicles, premises, and persons in respect of the sale of alcohol, regulated entertainment and late-night refreshment, premises under the Gambling Act 2005, street trading and vending, scrap metal, sex establishments and charity collections as well as any future licensing requirements.

As a Licensing officer you will be responsible for your own caseload including the day-to-day provision of licensing functions in accordance with council policies which may include the processing, production, and monitoring of licences, undertaking programmed and unannounced inspections, investigations and determine where necessary the appropriate enforcement action to be taken. You will work with a team of Technical Support and Licensing Officers, mentoring those with less experience.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced licensing officer with a breadth of licensing knowledge who can work independently on a wide range of licensing matters, ensuring compliance with our procedures, legislation, and best practice.

If, however, you do not have licencing training and knowledge, we would also welcome the applications of those with less experience with the right attitude, ability, and desire to learn to become a Licensing Officer. This would be a career progression opportunity to become a Licensing Officer with a starting salary of £23,484 per annum plus benefits package. Please see attached job description and person specification for Licensing Technical Support.

The nature of the post will require a flexible approach with the ability to travel around the local area and occasionally working outside what are regarded as normal hours.

In return we offer our employees:

  • access to a unique employee benefits package which includes discounts and cashback on supermarkets, high street shops, holidays, mobile phones, electrical goods, savings and loan schemes and many other products and services
  • flexible working options to enable work/life balance
  • agile working (ability to work in the office and from home) with work being an activity we do, not a place we go
  • a range of Health and Wellbeing initiatives including an employee assistance programme
  • discounted membership at Abbeycroft Leisure centres
  • a culture of learning inspiring staff to focus on continuous learning
  • annual leave entitlement of 24 days per annum (pro rata if part time) plus bank holidays, increasing to 28 days plus bank holidays after 5 years’ service (with an option to buy up to an additional 10 days annual each year subject to approval)
  • a generous pension scheme (LGPS) including life assurance (a payment of three times your annual salary)
  • Salary sacrifice benefits including childcare vouchers, Cycle to Work, Tusker Leased Car Scheme
  • Modern office accommodation
