Mid Sussex is an ambitious authority with one of the most significant growth programmes in the southeast. To help us deliver high-quality Environmental Health services, we are looking for a proactive and enthusiastic Licensing Officer to work in our Licensing, Food and Safety Team.

You will work in a team responsible for enforcing a wide and varied range of licensing legislation, including alcohol, animal welfare, gambling, scrap metal, campsites, and street trading. In addition, your role within the team will be to lead on taxi licensing.

You will determine licence applications, advise businesses, investigate complaints, and take enforcement action where appropriate. You will partner with external stakeholders, including the Police and West Sussex County Council. You will attend committee hearings, assess vehicles, work with vets to assess animal welfare, and attend court for appeals and prosecutions.

You will need to be able to communicate effectively with the public, applicants, partnership agencies and Members of the Council, and work on your own initiative and as part of a team. You must also be willing to work out of regular hours to attend committee hearings, undertake site inspections, carry out joint operations, and follow up complaint investigations.

You will get a competitive salary and a complete training programme for the role, and receive great staff benefits including generous holiday, pension, and car allowance. You will also enjoy discounted access to a number of health clubs in the district. We believe in the advantages of agile working to provide the best customer service: our team works flexibly across the office, home, and district, operating core hours with flexible start and finish times.

If this opportunity sounds like the role for you, we’d love to hear from you. If you would like a confidential discussion about the role, please contact Jon Bryant on 01444 477428.
