Proposed changes to Entertainment Licensing Statistics

Proposed changes to Entertainment Licensing Statistics 5th December 2018

The DCMS are consulting on proposals to discontinue the annual Entertainment Licensing Statistics release.  This is due to a number of factors including a lack of users, and is an attempt to improve statistical outputs and ensure that any such outputs meet user needs.

DCMS aims to continuously improve our statistical outputs and ensure they continue to meet user needs. We are also reviewing our outputs to ensure we make the most effective use of resources available.

The consultation proposes to discontinue the annual Entertainment Licensing Statistics release, on the basis that:

- Likely low user numbers

- The impact of de-regulation of various types of entertainment under the Licensing Act which mean that the reported statistics may not reflect an accurate picture of the number of premises and clubs hosting entertainment events.

- Responses from local authorities is gradually declining, meaning more reliance on estimates based on assumptions - this decreases the robustness of the overall figures over time.

The DCMS are keen to know how this proposal would impact on users. As such, this consultation seeks feedback from users on the Entertainment Licensing Statistics publication and specifically why the data is used, what information is used and how frequently.

Users are welcome to respond only to those questions they consider relevant to them.

Feedback and responses should be sent to DCMS by 17 January 2018 via email at, or by post to Emily Pycroft, Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, 4th Floor, 100 Parliament Street, London, SW1A 2BQ. Alternatively,  Emily can be contacted by telephone on 0207 211 6872.
