Government due to announce new alcohol strategy 16th May 2018

The Government has announced plans for a new alcohol strategy.

This month the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health and Social Care announced that the Government is developing a new alcohol strategy, part of which includes commissioning Public Health England to undertake a further review of the evidence for minimum unit pricing (MUP) in England.

There is currently no over-arching national alcohol strategy for England. The Government’s announcement follows the introduction of MUP in Scotland.

The Under-Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has not confirmed the date of the new strategy’s release, but it is expected to be published later the year. Although the case for MUP in England will once again be on the national agenda, other matters likely to be included in the strategy may include alcohol treatment service, labelling and possible further changes to the Licensing Act as a result of the House of Lords enquiry.
