Ashby turning purple after retaining nightlife award 12th October 2018

Bars, restaurants and businesses in Ashby are joining forces to host a Purple Flag party after the town successfully received accreditation for its excellent and safe nightlife for a second year.

A Purple Flag recognises excellence in the management of town and city centres at night.

To celebrate there will be a host of events and special offers available in the town on Saturday 20 October for everyone to enjoy. Look out for purple balloons and staff wearing purple t-shirts at participating venues.

Last year, visitors to the town received special offers, freebies and the chance to take part in a range of activities throughout the day at more than 20 venues.

A Purple Flag shows that a town’s night-time economy offers clean and safe environments, great bars and clubs, a variety of arts and cultural attractions and excellent transport links.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, with the support of North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), submitted the application for the renewal of the award after it was first achieved in 2017.

Ashby Town Council, NWLDC, Leicestershire Police, Safer North West Community Partnership, Ashby street pastors and the Ashby Pubwatch scheme all play a key role in the success Ashby’s night time economy.

Leader of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, Councillor John Coxon, said:

“I must say how pleased I am that Ashby de la Zouch has received their renewal accreditation of Purple Flag. A big thank you to everyone who helped out supplying the relevant data and the continued efforts of maintaining the high standards to retain the award.”

Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Community Services at NWLDC, said:

“Achieving Purple Flag status for the second year running is brilliant news for Ashby and something we can all be very proud of.

“Ashby town centre is fun, vibrant, entertaining, and most importantly, it’s a safe place to enjoy a night out, and the Purple Flag award emphasises this. Well done to everyone behind the application and to the people and venues of Ashby for helping to make the town so exciting and welcoming.”

Inspector Richard Jackson from Leicestershire Police said:

“We are pleased that Ashby is considered a safe and enjoyable place to socialise and will continue to work hard with our partners to make Ashby a safe place to live, work and visit.”
