COVID19 Licensing Issues: LGA guidance on use of screens in PHVs and taxis Published Date: 04/06/2020

The Local Government Association has issued guidance on approaches to the use of screens in private hire vehicles (PHVs) and taxis during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The LGA guidance signposts councils to relevant general guidance, as well sharing approaches taken by authorities, which have taken a position on the use of screens.

The LGA confirmed it had approached the DfT for advice and guidance to local authorities but this has not materialised.  Consequently, it will remain a decision for individual licensing authorities and local operators.

It said there is currently limited evidence about the effectiveness of temporary screens in reducing the risk of transmission of COVID-19. There is also a lack of clarity about the safety of fitting these types of screens in vehicles and “This has created a challenge for authorities who are being asked to approve the fitting of screens.”
